Visual poetry: learning through play with images

Visual poetry is not read… it is experienced. Each poem is a play of images that invites you to imagine, create, and express what you feel. There is no single way to understand them, but each poem conveys a specific message. You may align with the author’s intention or interpret it in your own personal way, but there is always an underlying meaning.

What will you find in the box?

  • 10 visual poems created by the visual poet Toni Prat, designed especially for children who cannot yet read, though they are also suitable for those who have already begun to do so.
  • A teacher’s guide written by Julieta Torrents, PhD in Didactics of Sciences, Languages, Arts and Humanities from the University of Barcelona. It includes open-ended questions that support the process without limiting it.
  • A QR code to project the poems on a digital whiteboard and work with them as a group.

The guide does not offer closed answers: it opens doors to thinking. The first questions invite a more literal observation of the poem; the following ones encourage a personal and creative reading, where each child can reflect, analyze, and interpret. The goal is not to find “the correct answer,” but to discover that, although there is a concrete message, each perspective can add different nuances.

How does it work in the classroom?

  1. Observe the poem and let yourself be surprised.
  2. Answer simple questions to describe what you see.
  3. Move from a literal reading to personal interpretations.
  4. Share: what other ways are there to look at the same thing? What emotions does it evoke?

Why is it different?

  • Because it turns the classroom into a space for discovery and conversation.
  • Because it teaches children to look at things from different angles.
  • Because it sparks curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
  • Because every child feels heard and valued.

For today’s classroom
In a world dominated by quick answers, visual poetry reminds us of something essential: to pause, observe, and dare to think differently — key steps in developing critical thinking.
